BOWMANVILLE, Ontario, Canada (July 12, 2015) – Visit Florida Racing again showed their championship poise on a difficult weekend at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, finishing fourth and building on their championship lead.
The No. 90 VISITFLORIDA.COM Chevrolet Corvette Daytona Prototype led four laps and ran in the top-5 throughout the Mobil 1 Sportscar Grand Prix enroute to their fourth place finish. The team battled throughout the weekend making incremental gains in their pace leading up to the two hour and forty minute sprint race.
“We didn’t have the pace that we wanted to this weekend, so it was great to be able to work our way to lead the race early on and to come out of the weekend with some championship points with the VISITFLORIDA.com car,” said Valiante.
“But that’s not what we want—we’d rather be taking care of the championship with wins and more podiums so we’ll focus on doing exactly that at Road America.”
While the finish wasn’t what Valiante and his Daytona Beach based team had in mind for the weekend, it did allow the team to add another two points to their championship lead as the series heads to Road America.
Teammate Richard Westbrook gave credit to his team for not giving up and continuing to push forward to make the Corvette DP more competitive.
“It was a challenging race for everybody, but the VISITFLORIDA.com guys executed well all weekend,” said Westbrook. “Unfortunately we were a bit on the back foot pace wise so we didn’t have the speed in hand to really fight for more. It was a solid day, but just not the kind of race we were hoping for. But now we’ve got Road America to look forward to and that’s an outstanding track with a lot of great Corvette fans and hopefully we can get back on top there.”
For team owner Troy Flis the difficult weekend his team experienced only went to reinforce his confidence in their ability to execute at a championship level.
“We had a decent weekend,” said Flis. “It wasn’t what we wanted but we’ve got to keep these top four’s and top five’s on the difficult weekends to compete for the championship.
“The biggest thing we have to do is keep this lead. We were able to extend our lead on second, even though a couple of teams were able to make up a few points. We just missed the setup a little bit but we’ll go back home and figure out how to fix it before the next one.”
The No. 90 VISITFLORIDA.com Corvette DP will enter the Continental Tire Road Race Showcase at Road America with a seven-point lead in the IMSA TUDOR United SportsCar Championship.
